Week 2

On Saturday, we went to the beach for what is called Xallatta (it means day after the feast). We stayed there for the whole day and swam. It's unusual for people here to go to the beach for the whole day. They normally go early in the morning or later in the afternoon and stay for a few hours then go home and have a siesta (sleep) before waking up to do something else or if they work they work normally until lunch time and go to the beach after lunch.

On Sunday, we went to Paceville for some lunch and to have a look around with my mum's cousin and her fiancé. Glen and I got a mocktail and when the waiter came with our drinks he gave me one and asked which other child was having the mocktail. When we told him it was for Glen, he got embarrassed and we laughed our heads off. It was really funny because the waiter thought it was either for my mum or her cousin. My mocktail was very fruity and nice.

After we went to Paceville, we went to a place called White Rocks for some cake. I got chocolate cake and it was delicious. The icing here is all made with Nutella rather than icing, which is a bit interesting.

On Monday, my Nanna took us to the water park in Buggiba. Before going in to the park we had to measure our height to tell us which area we are allowed in. The water park isn't like the places back home with pools and rides, this place just had equipment that sprayed and tipped water on you. It was ok and I liked the car wash part the best because water was sprayed out on you at different angles and at different times. After that, we walked over to the beach and had a proper swim, except it wasn't very sandy. The texture was extremely rocky and a little rough on your feet. It was like broken shells and tiny rocks mixed together. We finally got an ice-cream and my Nan bought us a donut from a donut van.

On Tusday night, we went to Sliema and St Gilian (St Julians Bay). We walked down the strip and admired the beautiful scenery.

We also stopped for a drink and it was funny to have one foot in Sliema and one foot in St Gilian, as the suburbs were right next to each other. The picture below is of my mum's cousin Shaun and I.

On Wednesday, it was my mum's birthday and to celebrate we made mum breakfast in bed then went to a hotel to have a swim in their pool. We then caught a bus to St Gilian and got a cold drink before catching the bus back home for her surprise birthday BBQ.

On Thursday, we went to Gozo with my family, my Nanna, my mum's uncle, her cousin and her cousin's son Keelin. While we were there we went to the beach and hung out at my mum's uncle's unit.

We had to sit in the back of my mum's uncle's van that didn't have seats or seat belts, so we had to hold on tight to make sure we didn't fall out the back. Thankfully mum's uncle locked the door from the outside. It was fun and although mum was constantly worrying, it is a memory I will always remember because we could never do that back home.

We had to catch a ferry to get to and from Gozo. It was fun, although Alan kept threatening to throw me overboard. Keelin felt a little sick on the way home.

On Friday, we had a BBQ at a beach called Facruna (Turtle beach). It was interesting and not like anything you see back home because my relatives put barrels on the rock and cooked our food in them. They hung lights from the rock too and we jumped into the sea from the same rock. People were gathered everywhere on this one rock and they had generators to keep the lights going. I felt a bit sick that night because I had an earache and headache, but still had a pretty good time.

This is my mum's cousin Justin. He is Keelin's dad and he is really fun to be around. He doesn't normally have a beard but he has grown one. He makes us laugh because whenever he is thinking he pulls a funny face and plays with his beard.

I hope you are all doing well and hope that the rain stops soon.

Thank you for sending messages on my blog. I love hearing from you all and hope you are enjoying my news and photos.

Love Mikayla

The Feast of Santa Maria (the Assumption of the Holy Mary).

During our first week in Malta, we went to the beach almost every day because of the heat and because a lot of companies close down to celebrate the Feast of Santa Maria (which meant most of my relatives were on holidays).

Every night, people gathered around the piazza (square) and ate, drank and socialised with friends and family. We walked down from my great aunts place every night and went to my granddad's friend's bar called the 'Olympic bar' where we had soft drinks and lots of ice-cream. On Thursday night, there were fireworks set up around the church and these were set off at 11.45pm. They were amazing to watch and an experience I will remember forever.

On Friday, we went out for lunch and later that afternoon most people from the village we live in called Mosta, gathered around the church to watch the statue of Saint Mary be carried around the streets. The marching band and people followed as the statue was walked around and we watched in awe. As the statue came back toward the church about 2hrs later, many people followed her into the church for a mass service.

The day after Santa Maria, it's traditional for most families to head off to the beach for the day. We went to a place called L'Armier and I spent most of the day swimming in the sandy beach with my relatives.

Our first week in Malta was awesome and I can't wait to see what next week will bring.

The Adventure Begins.

We decided to catch a train to the airport instead of driving because we were worried there would be too much traffic. While we were at Sydney airport and nearly ready to leave, we stopped to do some Duty Free shopping. I bought a cow travel pillow, which was so comfy. We then left on our 14 hour flight to Dubai.

Dubai was very hot and the airport was huge. There were lots of shops meaning lots of people too. From there we had to go to Larnica, (which is in Cyprus) to refuel and pick up more people. The flight took a little longer because we had to fly away from Iraq.

The flight to Malta was very smooth and I watched lots of movies. When we arrived we had so many aunts and cousins waiting for us. We went to my mum's aunts house and will be staying with them during our stay.
